Creating a new collection of silk scarves would not be possible without extensive testing

Dyeing silk with natural materials is a fascinating and rewarding process that can result in unique and beautiful fabric. In this journal post, we will explore the process of using four different plant-based materials – onion, pomegranate, black beans, and acorns – to create rich, vibrant dyes for silk.

Pomegranates are an excellent source of natural yellow dye.  To make a dye, boil the pomegranate peel in water until the liquid turns a deep yellow, strain the liquid and use it to dye silk.  The result is a bright yellow that will give your fabric a bold and eye-catching look.

Onion is an easily available ingredient that can be used to create orange and burgundy dye.  To make dye, simply boil chopped onion skins in water until the water is the right color, strain the liquid and use it to dye silk.  We used brown and red onion skins, resulting in a nice orange hint and a deep burgundy color.

Black beans are commonly used to create a deep earthy taupe dye.  To make dye, boil black beans in water until the water turns brown, strain the liquid and use it to dye silk.  The resulting color will be a nice soft gray that will give your fabric a natural touch.

Acorns are a great source of natural brown dye.  To make dye, boil acorns in water until the water turns brown, strain the liquid and use it to dye silk.  The resulting color will be a golden to deep walnut brown that will give your fabric a natural and sophisticated hue.  Our result is a soft golden tone.

By using natural materials like onion, pomegranate, black beans, and acorns to dye silk, you can create unique and beautiful fabric that is both environmentally friendly and stylish. Whether you choose to dye a scarf, a piece of clothing, or a piece of home décor, you can be proud of the sustainable and ethical process behind your creation.
